About
| Kenny Mianscum was born along the shores of Chibougamau Lake, near his present hometown of Ouje-Bougoumou, Eenou Istchee (James Bay, northern Quebec). Kenny was not raised in the traditional ways of his people and had to re-learn his language. At the of 17, he returned home and his father took him out of school, as his father had tuberculosis, and needed a helping hand out on the land.
At the age of six, Kenny attend the residential school in La Tuque, whereby, he heard for the first time the acoustic guitar, played by some friends, and he immediately fell in love with the sound of the guitar. He dreamed of playing this instrument, one day, and at the age of 14, he received a guitar from his parents. He is self taught and basically learned the basic chords (A, D, G, C, E…etc!), from memory, from watching his friends play the instrument. In the midst of this journey, Kenny included alcohol and drugs in his life and for many years, he set aside the guitar and never played it again, until his wife asked him if he knew how to play the guitar and never realized how much he missed the sound of the instrument. After dusting his old guitar, with broken strings, he began to play the instrument again, with much more appreciation. Actually, his late father brought him a new guitar, when he heard him play the guitar again. Who actually inspired him to begin to write his own songs was the late Morley (Molley) Loon, a Cree from Mistissini, Quebec. A friend had given him a copy of his recording, done in the Cree language, and was inspired to do the same. It was, only, years later that he shared his songs with some friends, privately, and it is these friends who encouraged him to share the songs that he had written. Gradually, he did… “Sunrise Prayer Offering” is a recording that took many years of convincing himself to do. In 2008, he contacted Mr. Dave Daw, engineer/ producer at Summit Sound Inc., in Westport, Ontario, and requested for his involvement on this project, and to his surprise Dave gladly accepted. He had never met Dave, nor his beautiful wife, Kathy, but they connected instantly and developed a beautiful friendship. What so amazing about this project is that the song, “Sunrise Prayer Offering”, includes a chant, (by Jonathan Maracle-Mohawk) never been done in a recording by any of the Cree performers from Eenou Istchee. At the age of 17, Kenny heard the traditional drum for the first time, and this instrument made an impact in his life, as he never heard the drum, until than. He heard his father sing with the drum, and when his parents heard the gospel in the „70‟s, his father put away the drum and he never played it again. It is the sound of this instrument that he never could forget, and he always felt that, one day, he‟d love to include this instrument in a song that would require this traditional instrument. |
