Our visionary leaders have long since expected CNACA to play a key role in the socio-economic development of Our people. At a certain time, our leaders had envisioned arts and crafts as important as trapping (CTA) and tourism (COTA). In that respect, CNACA was designed in sections 28.4 and 28.7 of the James Bay Agreement officially signed in 1978 :
- 28.7.1 - Create an Arts and Crafts program including structure, services, modalities, functions and agencies;
- 28.7.2 - After signature of the agreement and conduction of feasibility studies, create an Association who will administer and watch the good running of programs for the development of Arts and Crafts as well as local committee in each Cree community;
- 28.7.3 - The President of each local committee will be on the board of the Association;
- 28.7.4 - The Association will set up a Central service for commercial distribution of Arts and Crafts as well as supplying communities in terms of equipments and materials needed to create objects;
- 28.7.5 - According to feasibility studies’ positive conclusions and under the eventuality of an Association being created, Canada, Quebec and Regional Cree Association will help the Association in its activities and objects production (proportions to be determined).
In 2004, the Association was officially incorporated “to assume a leadership role on behalf of the Cree for the development of arts and crafts and the cultural industries of Eeyou Istchee.”
